Editorials, Opinion Forecasters are predicting temperatures in the 70s and 80s on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. But for diehard local sports fans, the start of school on Wednesday means the end of summer and the beginning of high school sports.
Even Camas Mayor Scott Higgins couldn’t hide his glee and anticipation. During a recent city council meeting, he lamented that summer would soon be over. But Higgins, who has served as a member of the Camas High School football team’s “chain gang” for many years, quickly changed his tune upon the realization that Papermaker football season was right around the corner.
The Camas-Washougal Post-Record’s newsroom has also been in an “autumn frame of mind.” Work on the newspaper’s annual Fall Sports Preview began last week. Led by Sports Reporter Dan Trujillo, staff writers are feverishly setting up interviews and photo shoots with local coaches and players. Each and every Greater St. Helens League sport played at our two local high schools will be featured, from swimming and tennis to golf, football, slow-pitch softball, soccer and more.
This labor-intensive special section will be inserted into the Tuesday, Sept. 15 edition, just as pre-season play is ramping up.
The weather predictions may still be unseasonably warm, but you’ll find many are already in a fall state of mind, as high school sports fans, and reporters, prepare for another great season.
