An unforgettable journey to the Babe Ruth World Series

The 13-year-old all-stars from Camas-Washougal Babe Ruth brought home a victory and a lifetime of memories from the Babe Ruth World Series in Jamestown, New York.

“Not only did we make it to the World Series, we also won a World Series game,” said manager Bob Gibbs. “I’m just really proud of these kids. They represented Camas-Washougal Babe Ruth perfectly. This whole experience is something they are never going to forget.”

Camas-Washougal scored five runs in the sixth inning to defeat Tallahassee-Leon, Florida 10-6 Aug. 18. Gideon Malychewski smacked a 2-run double with the bases loaded to break a 5-5 tie. He drove in three runs on two hits and scored three times on four stolen bases.

Kolby Broadbent knocked in two runs on three hits. Riley Sinclair and Evan Stott had two hits each and an RBI. Kolton Andrews added an RBI.

Beau Kearsey earned the victory on the mound. He gave up an unearned run, a hit and two walks in 2.2 innings pitched.

“We had guys step up and give us big performances at the state and regional levels, and all the way through the World Series,” Gibbs said.

Tri-County, Maine scored six runs in the first two innings and held on for a 7-3 victory against Camas-Washougal, Aug. 19.

Malychewski tripled to lead off the game. He finished with two hits and two runs scored. Tyler Forner drove in two runs on two hits. Broadbent added a double and an RBI.

The loss prevented Camas-Washougal from advancing into the championship bracket. They finished the World Series with a 1-3 record.

“These boys love playing ball together. I think that’s what separates the good teams from the great ones,” Gibbs said. “The way they fed off each other in the dugout just took them to a whole different level.”

Blake Asciutto, Jackson Gibbs, Drew Ott, Keegan Amberg, Logan Kearsey, Michael Whitney and Tyler Egan were also a part of the Camas-Washougal team. Andrew Ott and Keith Broadbent served as assitant coaches.

Gibbs said he would never forget the joy of seeing these kid’s dreams come true.

Together, they captured the Southwest Washington Babe Ruth state championship, the Pacific Northwest Regional Championship and a win at the Babe Ruth World Series.

“As a coach, it’s an honor to be a part of a team like this,” Gibbs said. “You can spend countless hours and days preparing for something like this. Once you cross those white lines, it’s in their hands. And they did it. They delivered.”
