Schools notes for May 26, 2015

CHS DECA members succeed at international contest Twenty-six Camas High School students traveled to Orlando, Florida, to compete at the annual DECA International Career Development Conference. Competitors hailed from all 50 states, Canada and Spain. Among the 26 Camas students, competition was split between research projects and role-play mock business scenarios. Seven Camas DECA members, Shannon Ahearn, Nataley Dormier, Satya Hariharan, Noah White, Louie Avino, Areeb Ahsan and Cameron Vega qualified for the final rounds of competition, automatically placing them in the top 18 competitors worldwide in their respective events. From there, Nataley Dormier and Shannon Ahearn placed in the top 10 worldwide for their work on a financial literacy research project. Of special note is Vega, who placed second in the world for his automotive service marketing event. The student group was the largest Camas has ever sent to ICDC and included five first-year DECA members. C-Tran offers Summer Blast Pass to youth C-TRAN's Summer Blast Pass is now available to riders ages 7 to 18 years old. For $60, youth can have access to unlimited C-Zone travel and discounts from local vendors throughout the summer. Starting June 1, "Honored" and "Youth" riders can purchase a discounted all-zone day pass directly from their bus operator for $2. Locals earn degrees Two students from Camas have earned degrees from Saint Martin's University in Lacey, Wash. They are Anthony D. Kern, Bachelor of Arts degree in business administration, and Zachary R. Carter, Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering. AAUW holds Scholarship Recognition Day The American Association of University Women, Hudson's Bay branch, held its 'Scholarship Recognition Day' May 17 in the Firstenburg Commons at Washington State University Vancouver. In the three stem subjects of math, science and technology, several local high school juniors were selected by their counselors to be honored for being at the top of their class. The following students received awards: Camas High School -- Anna Roche, math; Fan Liu, science; Eileen Lee, technology; Excelsior High School -- Miranda Lee, math; Noelle Hofferbert, science; Hannah Shilling, technology; Hayes Freedom High School -- Kaelene Barlow, science; Abby Wolfe, technology; and Washougal High School -- Aisha Marcos, math; Emma Hein, science; Katxia Moua, technology.
