Uta Zuendel will be honored Saturday at noon during the Camas Plant and Garden Fair, when a plaque will be unveiled at Northeast Fourth Avenue and Cedar Street. Eighteen years ago, Zuendel founded the event after selling plants and flowers from the back of her bright yellow 1980 Toyota pickup truck. Now, it is a popular annual event featuring 90 vendors and attended by 5,000 people. Pictured above, Zuendel holds a watercolor painting by Camas artist Mike Smith, which features that yellow truck near the corner of Northeast Fourth Avenue and Dallas Street previously the site of the Ideal Corner Cafe (now Natalia's Cafe). The image, presented by Smith to Zuendel, will be hanging in the window at Camas Gallery during Saturday's event.

It all started with a letter Uta Zuendel received in her mailbox more than 20 years ago.

Sent by an organization then known as the Camas Downtown Association, it requested feedback from citizens about what changes they would like to see downtown.
