Deflating the competition

After losing the district title to Skyview in a shootout a season ago, the Camas High School boys soccer team gained a sliver of revenge Wednesday at Doc Harris Stadium.

Dominic Fewel headed the ball into the net to put the Papermakers on the board first in the 22nd minute.

“Dominic has been absolutely amazing coming in as a freshman,” said junior captain Bennett Lehner. “He’s been our most consistent player. It’s nice to see him get rewarded.”

Camas added three more goals during a 10-minute outburst in the second half to win the game 4-0. Lehner netted back-to-back goals in three minutes. Cameron Eyman kicked in the final goal on an assist by Danny Wing.

“We’ve been doing that a lot lately,” Lehner said. “If you can get on a roll like that, it really deflates the other team.”

The Papermakers have been a machine in the second half. They scored all six of their goals against Columbia River during the final 40 minutes of the match. Camas also broke a scoreless game with Evergreen wide open by netting four goals in the second half. The Papermakers led Mountain View 1-0 at halftime, before putting them away 4-1.

Mountain View is the only team to score a goal on Camas in 720 minutes of soccer. The Papermakers capped off the first half of the season with a 1-0 victory at Battle Ground Friday. The decisive goal came in the second half. Jakob Cavin flanked the ball back to Lehner, and Lehner blasted the ball into the net.

“It’s good to see improvement, but we haven’t done anything yet,” said head coach Roland Minder. “We’re still in the first run through league.

Camas (9-0) hosts Union Tuesday, April 14, at Doc Harris Stadium. Then the second run through league starts. The Papermakers host Battle Ground, but they have to play on the road against Skyview and Union.

“Take things one game at a time, and approach every team with respect,” Lehner said. “We’ve won all the battles so far, but the war isn’t over yet.”
