Camas sweeps Heritage on Hoops for Pink night

The Camas High School basketball teams swept Heritage off the court Thursday, and raised thousands of dollars for breast cancer research.

“The girls really carried on the tradition well,” head coach Chuck Knight said about the seventh Hoops for Pink fundraiser. “They represented this school and community with all their passion.”

The Papermaker girls defeated Heritage 49-23 for their 14th victory in a row. Nikki Corbett scored 14 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Brenna Khaw added eight assists.

Teague Schroeder knocked down a couple of threes, and finished with eight points. Emma Jones and Nora Monghate each had six points. Rachel Gray, Meghan Finley, Stephanie Knight, Phoebe Gadbaw and Jillian Webb also made baskets.

Gray said the Papermakers gave extra effort for all of the breast cancer victims in the stands. Former team parent Christina Bonazelli died of the disease in 2013. The girls wrote her initials in pink on their arms.

“Appreciate everything you have. Someone else’s situation could be worse than yours,” Gray said. “When so many people come together for one cause, it really makes a big difference.”

The Camas girls (15-3, 10-0) will need another gigantic effort to dissuade Skyview tonight. A win would secure the program’s first 4A Greater St. Helens League championship.

“Skyview is the four-time defending league champions. That’s not by accident,” Knight said. “We have a lot of respect for that team and that program. We know they have not forgotten about that last match up.”

Camas beat Skyview 49-46 Jan. 16, on a 3-pointer by Schroeder before time expired. The Papermakers expect a fierce Storm tonight. Tipoff is at 7 p.m.

“We want to prove that we are capable of beating the best,” Gray said. “Just work hard, hustle and put your heart into every second because it’s not going to last forever.”

Finishing strong

The Camas boys basketball team took care of Heritage 59-41 Thursday. Ethan Unger delivered 14 points off four 3-pointers.

“My teammates found me out in the open, and I was confident knocking those shots down,” Unger said. “On the bench, our role is to talk and get our teammates pumped up. When we step on the court, it’s all about executing and helping out the team any way that we can.”

Trevor Jasinsky added 13 points and James Price chipped in 10. Jasinsky also dunked a pass to the hoop by Jordan Anderson.

“It felt good to throw one down on a special night for my team and my community,” Jasinsky said. “This was bigger than a game. It showed how a community can come together for an important cause.”

The Papermaker boys (13-5, 7-3) wrap up league at home against Skyview today and Mountain View Thursday. Camas aims for a second place finish. Both games begin at 5:30 p.m.
