CHS musician to perform at nationals

Isaac Hodapp is making quite a name for himself in the arts.

The Camas High School sophomore was recently selected as a member of the 2013 All-National Symphonic Band by the National Association for Music Education.

As a freshman, he made all-state symphony orchestra, and won the district solo and ensemble contest in the trumpet solo category.

Hodapp, 15, will travel to Nashville, Tenn. and join more than 670 of the most musically talented high school students in the country Oct. 27 to 30.

“These exceptional students will prepare remarkably challenging music that they will perform under the baton of four of the most prominent conductors in the United States: Dr. Peter Boonshaft, Miriam Burns, Rollo Dilworth and Rodney Whitaker,” a NafME press release stated.

The group will perform for an audience of thousands on Wednesday, Oct. 30 at the Gaylord Opryland Hotel.

The NAfME All-National Honors Ensembles, consisting of a concert band, symphony orchestra, mixed chorus, and jazz ensemble, are organized by members of the NafME.

The concert band and symphony orchestra will each have approximately 150 instrumentalists, the jazz ensemble will have 20 instrumentalists, and the mixed chorus will have approximately 350 vocalists.

Eligible students have qualified for their state-level honor ensemble program and competed against top students from all over the United States for a spot in these national honor ensembles.

Hodapp is one of only 18 trumpet players chosen for the symphonic band, and one of only three students from the state of Washington chosen.

A bassoon player and euphonium player were also selected. He was the only band musician from the Southwest Washington area.

“Isaac is a hard-working student and a fine musician,” said his band director, Richard Mancini.

“He takes instruction well, which is one of the keys to success in any area of life. I know he will have a fantastic experience in Nashville and will represent our school, community, and state with the highest level of musicianship and behavior. I’m very proud of him for this achievement.”
