Skills Center students compete for state

After capturing regional titles, sixteen students from the Clark County Skills Center will compete in the State SkillsUSA competition next month in Renton, Wash. There, they will vie for state championships and trips to the national SkillsUSA this June in Kansas City, Mo.

The winners represent 12 schools in Clark County and three Skills Center programs: pre-engineering design, automotive technology and construction technology.

Regional Gold Medal winners were Skyview senior Mayra Gonzalez, creed; Columbia River Homelink senior Shane Allen, carpentry; Heritage senior Kevin Rothe, auto service; Skyview junior Slavg Klets, auto maintenance; and Camas senior Seth Albert, architectural drafting.

Owned and operated by all 10 southwest Washington school districts, the Skills Center provides technical and professional training programs to Clark County high school students.

WHS to host Japanese festival

The seventh-annual Japanese Culture Festival is coming to the Washougal High School commons Saturday, from 1 to 5 p.m.

There is no cost to view the exhibits. Food items range from $2 to $3 each. There will be performances, including taiko drummers, from 2 to 5 p.m., Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for students, youth and senior citizens, and free for children 5 and younger.

Kwan makes dean’s list

Cameron Kwan of Camas has been named to the Rochester Institute of Technology’s dean’s list for the winter 2013 quarter.

Rochester Institute of Technology, located in Rochester, N.Y., is internationally recognized for academic leadership in computing, engineering, imaging science, sustainability, and fine and applied arts.

Host families sought

CIEE, a non-profit high school exchange organization, is seeking host families for several students coming to Washington and Oregon for the 2013-14 school year. They are from various countries and range in age from 15 to 17.

The organization welcomes all kinds of volunteer families, including those with children or no children, single parents, “empty nesters,” and others.

Students have appropriate visas, medical insurance and pay for their own expenses with the exception of food and utilities.

Richter named to dean’s list

Camas resident Joy Richter has been named to the fall semester dean’s list at Azusa Pacific University in Los Angeles.

To be named to the list, students must earn at least a 3.5 GPA. Richter is a psychology major.
