Festival poster contest set

All youth are invited to participate in the Camtown Youth Festival poster contest.

Poster design must be drawn on white, 8.5 by 11 inch paper, and any art medium maybe used.

Entrants should use some of the festival elements in their poster design, such as slides, bounce houses, carnival games, petting zoo, food vendors, art show, etc.

The deadline is Friday, March 29. Students must write their name, school, grade and phone number on the back of the design. Drop off submissions at the Camas Community Center, 1718 S.E. Seventh Ave., or mail to P.O. Box 1055, Camas, WA 98607, Attn. CYF Poster Contest.The winners will be announced the week of April 15.Camtown will be held Saturday, June 8, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., at Crown Park in Camas.

Pancake breakfast scheduled

A pancake breakfast will be held Saturday from 8 to 10:30 a.m. at the Canyon Creek Middle School commons, 9731 Washougal River Road.

Cost is $5 for adults and $3 for children 11 and younger. Proceeds benefit the school.

Entertainment will be provided by Canyon Creek band and choir students. The choir will also be perform at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 12.

Schumacher is on dean’s list

Camas resident Jace Schumacher has been named to the dean’s list at Central Washington University for fall quarter 2012.

Wales named to dean’s list

Blake C. Wales, a 2010 Camas High School graduate, was named to the dean’s list at Adelphi University in Garden City, N.Y.

Students must earn at least a 3.5 GPA to be named to the list.

Currently, Wales is studying abroad at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts in England for the spring semester.

Grass Valley seeks ‘Big’ volunteers

Grass Valley Elementary School in Camas will team up with Big Brothers Big Sisters, to partner adult volunteers with second-, third-, and fourth-grade students.

Volunteers will visit the school once a week to spend time with their student. It will begin by having students eat lunch with their mentors and eventually they may engage in other activities together such as recess or educational games.

This program has been demonstrated to increase students’ academic outcomes, attendance, and behavior, according to teacher and organizer Chrys Royall.

Adult volunteers must be over the age of 18 and able to commit to spending 40 minutes to an hour once a week with a child at school. Volunteers will go through an interview process with Big Brothers Big Sisters and also submit to a background check and training.

There are two options for how each partnership will progress at the end of the school year. The mentors could continue meeting with the student in a community setting, or take the summer off and resume volunteering at the beginning of the school year.

CHS presents ‘Into the Woods’

“Into the Woods,” music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, is being presented by the Camas High School drama department.

Performances are scheduled for Friday at 7 p.m., and Saturday, at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m., at the CHS Theatre, 26900 S.E. 15th St.

Cost is $7 per person.

The musical is based on the book by James Lapine, who also originally directed the show on Broadway.

High school students can take part in art competition

High school students who live or attend school in the Southwest Washington’s Third Congressional District are invited to participate in the 2013 Congressional Art Competition.

The winner will have his or her artwork displayed for one year in the U.S. Capitol Building Corridor in Washington D.C. The winner will also receive free airfare for themselves and one guest to attend a ribbon cutting ceremony in Washington D.C.

“The Congressional Art Competition is a change for members of Congress to show off the most talented artists from their districts,” said Congresswoman Jaime Herrera Buetler, R-Camas. “It’s become a tradition in our nation’s capitol, and I look forward to seeing submissions from talented students here in Southwest Washington.”

Camas and Washougal are located within the Third District.

The deadline to enter is April 11.
