CHS hosts college and career event

The annual Camas High School college and career options fair will be held from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday in the CHS gym, 26900 S.E. 15th St. During the event, students and parents may visit with representatives from two- and four-year colleges, technical schools and all military branches. There will also be workshops such as, “Demystifying the Financial Aid Process,” “College 101” and “Standardized Testing.”

Breakout sessions begin at 7 p.m., and will allow parents and students to visit with representatives in a classroom setting for detailed questions. For more information, contact Leontina Liebe or Suzie Downs at 833-5750.

Kids can vote in general election

Every kindergarten through 12th grade student in Clark County can vote in a mock presidential election this fall. As in the general election, kids will vote starting on Wednesday Oct. 16 through links on a website and Facebook page.

There are three ways for kids to vote: Students can be directed to school computers to access the electronic ballot, by using a special edition of the voter’s pamphlet and paper ballot prepared for by the Clark County Elections department, or vote using their home computer.

Votes will be tallied by overall number, as well as school “precincts.” Students working on their senior project will tally the results of written ballots.

Partners for Schools hopes to improve communication

In an attempt to increase community understanding of school achievements and issues, the Washougal School District is assembling a group of key community members called Partners for Schools.

“The goal for this group is to learn firsthand about the positive work going on in the schools, as well as provide us with valuable insight and input on educational issues important to them,” said Dawn Tarzian, Washougal School District superintendent.

The creation of Partners for Schools came as a result of the Community Strategic Planning process that began last year.

Any community member is welcome to join; but must sign up by sending an e-mail to Partners@washougalsd.org to receive a Google Group invitation. Once they join, participants will:

o Receive periodic messages on news topics relevant to schools and community.

o Receive e-mail communications directly from the superintendent.

o Be invited to attend periodic, short gatherings to discuss issues that concern the schools and the community.

o Provide input and feedback regarding important issues.

A Partners for Schools kick off event is set for Thursday, Oct. 18, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Washougal High School Commons, 1201 39th St.

Skills Center plans Feast

Students in the Clark County Skills Center Restaurant Management and Culinary Arts Program invite the community to “Celebrate the Autumn Harvest,” Friday, Nov. 2 at the Skills Center Restaurant, 12200 N.E. 28th St., in Vancouver.

Beginning at 6:30 p.m., the 5-course feast features a main course of roasted chicken with forest mushroom veloute, red garnet sweet tomato hash and a melody of fall vegetables.

Tickets are $30 per person (with $15 tax deductible) and must be purchased in advance.
