WHS turf fundraiser kicks off Friday

The Washougal High School Turf Campaign Committee will kick off its fundraising efforts Friday at the first WHS home varsity football game.

The committee is selling bricks for the creation of a “Panther Walk” to be installed over the summer of 2013 at the entrance to Fishback Stadium.

Bricks can be personalized with up to three lines of text (17 characters per line) on a 4 by 8 brick for $100. Another option is to put five lines of text (17 characters per line) on an 8 by 8 brick for $500 for individuals/families and $1,000 for business/corporate donors.

All proceeds will go toward the purchase of a new turf field to replace the aging one at Fishback Stadium.

Bricks must be purchased by Dec. 14. Cash donations in any amount are also welcome and corporate/business sponsorships are available. Visit the turf campaign website at whsturfcampaign.com.

Writing contest for teens set

The Fort Vancouver Regional Library will host a writing contest for students in sixth- through 12th grade who live within, attend school, or are home schooled in the library district. Winners will be announced on Friday, Oct. 19 at an awards ceremony. Contact any branch library or teens@fvrl.org for contest information.

Young Life sets fundraiser

Camas/Washougal Young Life, a non-profit serving local high school and middle school students, is hosting a garage sale fundraiser event.

It will be Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Young Life “Barn,” located at the corner of Northeast Everett Drive and Southeast Gardner Road in Camas, one mile north of Lacamas Lake.

Skills Center instructor earns statewide award

Ray Nelson, a Clark County Skills Center Electro-Digital Technologies instructor, has received the WA IT Academy Innovative Teaching Strategies Award from the Washington State Superintendent of Public Instruction Randy Dorn.

The award is given to “a teacher or program that has integrated IT Academy Resources into a classroom by integrating content-area knowledge, by exhibiting creativity or problem solving or by illustrating a 21st Century Learning environment.”

Nelson was honored at the Washington Career and Technical Education Summer Conference and received his award Tuesday, Sept. 4 at a special ceremony at the Skills Center.

He is beginning his second year as Instructor for EDT2 as well as building tech coordinator for the Skills Center campus.

The Skills Center opened in the fall of 1983. It is owned and operated by ten southwest Washington school districts, including Camas and Washougal, and provides technical and professional training programs to prepare Clark County high school and college students for the workforce.

CHS Grad Night fundraiser set

The annual flamingo flocking will soon come to homes in the Camas area. This is a fundraiser for Camas 2013 Grad Night, a drug and alcohol free celebration open to all Camas seniors immediately following graduation.

To suggest a roosting site at the home of an unsuspecting friend or neighbor, a donation of $20 is requested, and homes must be in the Camas or Washougal area.

Those who would like the birds to never roost at their home can purchase “flocking insurance” for $20.00.

Otherwise, the festive flock of pink flamingos may appear mysteriously overnight.

Once the birds land, the flocked family can have them quickly removed within 48 hours or sent to another unsuspecting household for a donation.

Exchange program seeks host families

CIEE, a non-profit high school exchange organization, has several students coming to Washington for the current school year and needs assistance in finding them good homes and families that share their interests.

These students are described as active and interested in learning about American culture.

All kinds of volunteer families are encouraged to host, including those who children or no children, single parents and other non-traditional families. The main requirements are kindness and a willingness to learn about a foreign culture.

Students have the appropriate visa, medical insurance and pay for all of their own expenses, with the exception of food and utilities.

Camas library plans events for kids and teens

There are several events for children and teens at the Camas library. These include:

Teen Read Cafe: This is a book discussion group for seventh- through 12th grade students. Teens borrow a copy of the book from the library, read it, come to the meeting, and then get to keep the book for free

There will also be an activity and snacks.

A limited number of spots are available; and sign-up is required.

The next book is “Sleeping Freshmen Never Lie” by David Lubar, on Tuesday Sept. 18 at 4 p.m.

Books are available for pick-up now.

Page Turner Book Discussion Group: This group is for fourth-grade and older, as well as their parents. Readers borrow a copy of the book from the library, read it, come to the meeting, and get to keep the book for free.

Sign-up is required. Snacks and an activity are included at the meeting. The next book discussion will be 7p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 9. Books will be announced soon.

Book Swap for Kids and Teens: Trade used books (or movies or music CDs) with the library or with others. Participants may take home as many books as they bring. The library will donate several boxes of books to the swap.

It will be held Friday, Oct. 5, from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m.

Teen Read Week: All are invited to look at the famous teen book in a jar, and those who can guess its title receive a prize.

All ages can play. Teen Read Week is Oct. 14 to 20.
