EWU announces spring dean’s list Several local students were named to the dean’s list at Eastern Washington University. To be named to the list, a student must earn at least a 3.5 GPA and take 12 graded credits. They include Allyson Dunlap, Sara Forgey, Casey Kroll, Ellen McHugh, Alison Owens, Jessie Tai and Melissa Williams, all of Camas; and Patrick Scheel of Washougal. WHS grad fares well in college Lukas Johnson of Washougal graduated Summa Cum Laude with his bachelor’s degree in English from Washington State University in May 2011. He was also named “outstanding senior” for the English department. Three weeks later he began his master’s in teaching accelerated degree program, and finished graduate school in 12 months on June 1. The day prior, he was offered a full-time teaching job in English at Asotin-Anatone High School in Asotin, Wash. Johnson graduated from WHS as salutatorian in 2006. Garden plots available Clark County Homegrown Gardens has prepared 4 by 8 foot raised garden beds, which are available to the public in Washougal. Individuals who are not income qualified will be asked to donate some of the harvest to a local emergency food pantry, but would still be able to have a harvest for personal use as well. For more information, contact Kris Potter at 695-5627. ‘Weed and Feed’ Wednesdays set at Camas Roots Garden Volunteers are needed this summer for “Weed and Feed” Wednesdays at the Camas Roots Garden. Community members are invited to help with weeding, planting and other basic garden maintenance. As the season progresses, produce will be harvested for the Inter-faith Treasure House food bank. The garden will be open every Wednesday morning from 9 a.m. to noon through Aug. 29. Families are welcome. Camas Roots is a partnership between the Camas School District and community volunteers. The garden is located just west of the JD Zellerbach Administrative Center building, 841 N.E. 22nd Ave. For more information, call Elisa Wells at 833-0925. Stone earns dean’s list honors Cadet Natalie Stone, daughter of Michael and Devon Stone of Camas, has been named to the dean’s list and has achieved Distinguished Cadet Academic Recognition for the spring semester at the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, N.Y. To be named to the dean’s list, a cadet must maintain a 3.0 GPA in all courses. Distinguished Cadet Academic Recognition requires a 3.67 average in all courses. Stone graduated from Camas High School in 2010 and will be commissioned a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army upon graduation at West Point. 4-H Camp has openings Happy Trails 4-H Day Camp in Camas has openings for its Wild West Camp and Wrangler Horse Camp, both of which begin Monday, July 23. Wild West Camp will include historical activities through hands-on learning. Wrangler Horse Camp will foucs on improving riding skills. The cost is $180 for Wild West Camp and $200 for Wrangler Camp. Both run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. Campers must be at least 5 to attend Wild West Camp and 10 years old for Wrangler Camp.
