Library hosts Hunger Games party

The Camas Public Library is hosting a party for teens to celebrate the debut of the best-selling book “The Hunger Games” as a major Hollywood movie. The party will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday, March 22. Teens in seventh- through 12th-grade are invited to come to the library for an afternoon of themed activities.

Attendees will eat food from “The Arena,” build a mini bow and arrow, create a “muttation,” learn bird calls, participate in a “tracker jacker chase” and Cornucopia competition, learn emergency first aid tips and join in a free raffle.

There will be a bonus prize for all who come in costume.

Required registration can be completed by stopping in the library, 625 N.E. Fourth Ave., or by calling 834-4692.

AP testing sign-ups open

The sign-up period for Advanced Placement testing at Camas High School in May will continue through Friday, March 23. Students who qualify for reduced fees may obtain a form from the counseling office. Qualifying students pay $15 per test for up to three tests, and $53 for each additional test.

AP fee reduction approval follows free and reduced lunch program qualifying guidelines.

The regular fee per test is $87. All forms and fees must be returned by March 23 or extra fees may be charged.

BIA accepting applications for scholarships

The Building Industry Association of Clark County is now accepting applications for academic scholarships through its Building Futures Foundation. It is the educational foundation for the BIA, which has promoted public education, student scholarships and environmentally sensitive building practices in the building industry since 2002.

Scholarships will be awarded to qualified students pursuing an education in the building, construction and real estate trades at an accredited college, university or trade institution. Selection criteria are financial need, academic relationship to the building industry, grade point average and quality of application submitted.

The Building Futures Foundation scholarship application is available at: www.biaofclarkcounty.org/edit/site_files/_fileCabinet/2012ScholarshipApplication.pdf. Completed applications must be submitted by Sunday, April 15.

In addition to the local scholarship program, the state organization, Building Industry Association of Washington, is also offering scholarships to assist and encourage workforce training in the construction industry, through its Mackenzie Cowell Memorial Scholarship program. The Mackenzie Cowell Memorial Scholarship application is available on the BIAW’s website at www.biaw.com or by calling Amanda Fields in the BIAW education program at 800-228-4229. Complete applications must be postmarked by Sunday, May 13.

WHS students fare well at machining contest

Four students from the WHS metals program recently took part in a machining competition at Clark College for Skills USA.

Ilia Svistun was the first-place winner and Douglass Murray was the third-place winner. These two students are now eligible to compete at the state level.

Also representing WHS were Robert Raynor and Braden Devlin

“These students should be congratulated for their outstanding accomplishment,” teacher Don O’Brien said.

Nicholson earns dean’s list honors

Lisa Nicholson of Camas was recently named to the dean’s list in the Foster School of Business Administration at the University of Washington.

Apprenticeships available for music students

The Oregon Chamber Players are accepting applications for its Student Apprenticeship Program for advanced music students.

The group will accept a limited number of students for this unique program. Those accepted will be entitled to private coaching of the music being performed in a May 5 concert, a chance to observe a rehearsal and the rare opportunity to actually play in a rehearsal.

Apprenticeship students will also receive a free ticket for the concert.

There is no fee for this program, though a $50 refundable deposit is required with the application.

This program is intended for high school & college-aged music students playing orchestral instruments that best fit programming for the May 5 concert, so we will be accepting applications for musicians that play all string instruments, flute and oboe.

Those accepted from their application must be available in the evening for the following dates: Wednesday, April 18, Wednesday, April 25 and Saturday, May 5.
