Too hot to handle

Neither Camas nor Prairie netted a basket in the first 3 1/2 minutes of Saturday’s game, at Camas High School.

For the remainder of the first quarter, Prairie outscored Camas 25-5.

Jenka Stiasna made her second of two foul shots to give the Papermakers a 1-0 lead. The Falcons then scored 13 straight points and kept adding on for a 65-35 victory.

“Their score went from 0 to 10 in about a minute,” said Camas head coach Chuck Knight. “When they get a rebound, and you have even a quarter of a second of hesitation, they are going to beat you up the floor.

“You can never hesitate. You have to sprint and you have to locate,” he added. “A lot of their points came off our turnovers. We have to handle the pressure better.”

Camas settled down in the second half, and started to attack the basket. Lauren Neff had a nice rebound and a put back for two points. Sydney Allen laid in an assist from Stiasna, Tatum Schroeder served a dish by Kendra Preuninger and Neff netted four more points on passes from Preuninger and company. Sierra Brown also had a rebound and a put back for two.

“We outscored Prairie in the third quarter, and the fourth quarter was pretty even too,” Knight said. “It’s good to know we competed for a full half and got better.”

Stiasna scored 14 points for the Papermakers and grabbed 9 rebounds. She also made 6 of her 9 attempts from the foul line. Allen followed Stiasna’s lead with 8 points, and Neff chipped in 6.

“It’s good to play tough competition like that because it makes you play better,” Allen said. “In the end, we competed and that’s what we came out to do.”

Allen and Stiansa scored most of their points off rebounds and fast breaks. Knight appreciated the effort.

“Sydney and Jenka only know one way to play, and that’s hard,” he said. “Whether it’s a game or practice, they go hard and that’s infectious on the whole team.”

Camas held Hudson’s Bay to 11 points Thursday, while scoring 57. The Papermakers led 30-5 at halftime, before outscoring the Eagles 27-6 in the second half. Bay was held scoreless in the fourth quarter.

Allen led the Camas attack with 16 points and 5 steals. Brown added 10 points, Brenna Khaw delivered 7 assists, Neff grabbed 7 rebounds and Stiasna snagged 6 boards.

Stiasna racked up 24 points in a 71-32 Camas victory over Columbia River Jan. 3. Allen added 15 points and 5 steals. Preuninger chipped in 12 points.

The Papermaker girls are hosting their annual Hoops for Pink Night Friday, at Camas High School. The Camas and Mountain View boys are up first at 5:30 p.m., followed by the girls at 7 p.m.

Hoops for Pink shirts are on sale on campus for $10 each. All the proceeds and donations at the event will benefit the Kay Yow Foundation for Breast Cancer Research.
