Camas girls soccer team sets sights on Prairie tonight

After delivering 18 goals in victories over Fort Vancouver and Mountain View last week, the Camas High School girls soccer players are ready to get revenge on Prairie tonight.

The battle for first place in league between the 6-1 Papermakers and the 5-1 Falcons has been moved to District Stadium, in Battle Ground. The game begins at 7 p.m.

Camas is coming off a 4-0 shutout over Mountain View Thursday. Olivia Lovell fired in the first goal on an assist from Mikaela Norrish. After helping get the Papermakers on the board, Norrish knocked in the second goal on service from Savannah Joyce. Emily Ponce put the third goal in the net on a penalty kick. Lauren Oljar delivered the final goal on a pass from Alex Dombek.

After defeating Camas 2-1 Sept. 15, Prairie had been on a roll until losing 3-0 to Columbia River Thursday. Now that everything is back to square one, the Papermakers have nothing but revenge on their minds tonight.

“We have to beat everyone from now on if we want the league title,” said Camas head coach Roland Minder. “We can’t have any more slip ups.”

The Washougal girls soccer team started off hot Thursday, before Woodland turned the game on a dime and won 3-2 in a shootout Fishback Stadium.

Megan Sharp and Melanie Chesnutis both netted corner kicks from Lauren Gavit to give the Panthers a 2-0 advantage, but the Beavers answered with two goals in the final 25 minutes of the first half to tie the game up at 2-2.

Neither team could catch a break in the second half or in overtime, which sent the game into a shootout. Chesnutis and Maddie Down made their penalty kicks, but the Panthers had two other shots blocked by the opposing goalkeeper. Woodland netted all four penalty kicks to clinch the victory.

“All year long, we’ve had a target on our backs because we were a team that rose from the ashes last year,” Down said. “We have to be able to rise to that challenge.”
