Washougal resident receives college honors

Sarah J. Walker of Washougal attended the University of Alaska Fairbanks during the 2010-11 school year and completed the year with dean’s list honors for spring semester.

She is now a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, and will be inducted during the Fall 2011 semester.

The NSCS is a member of the Association of College Honor Societies and is the nation’s only interdisciplinary honors organization for first- and second-year college students.

College Bound Scholarship program deadline coming soon

The College Bound Scholarship program, which is administered by the Higher Education Coordinating Board, promises college tuition and a book allowance to eligible students who graduate from high school, enroll in college, and meet other requirements.

In order to collect the scholarship, students must continue to meet financial eligibility requirements upon high school graduation.

As part of the process, eighth-grade students sign up by Friday, June 30, promise to graduate from high school, demonstrate good citizenship, and gain admission to an approved two- or four-year college or university, or an approved private career school.

Eligible eighth-graders who don’t complete applications by June 30 will not receive financial help under this program.

To be eligible, a Washington student must meet income requirements for the free and reduced price lunch program, be a foster youth, or be receiving Temporary Assistance for Needy Families.

Forgey graduates from Eastern

Logan Forgey earned a bachelor of arts degree from Eastern Washington University in recreation management this past weekend.

He is a 2007 Camas High School graduate and is the son of Lindsey Forgey and the late John Forgey.

CHS students win big at Imagine Tomorrow event

Teams of students from the Camas High School magnet program competed in the fourth-annual Imagine Tomorrow science problem solving competition held at Washington State University last month.

There were more than 50 high schools competing in this event from across the state, with more than 120 projects on display.

Despite the tough competition, CHS freshmen Carly Marshall, Lindsay Weinberg, Ryann Bruno, and Hailey Pfeifer won top honors in the behavioral category for their “Green Machine: Education through Compost” project.

Their efforts were rewarded with a cash prize of $5,000 and another $5,000 for the high school.

Free summer lunches offered at Hathaway

The Washougal School District will offer a summer feeding program to all children 18 and younger who reside in the district boundaries. They do not need to attend Washougal schools or meet any income or eligibility requirements.

Lunch will be provided at Hathaway Elementary School, 630 24th St., from 11:30 a.m. to noon, Monday through Friday, from July 5 to July 29, except the first week in July, due to the July 4 holiday on Monday. All meals must be consumed on site.

JWR will close until June 21

The Jack, Will and Rob Boys & Girls Club will be closed through Tuesday, June 21 for pre-summer workshops. The club will re-open on Wednesday, June 22, the final day of school in the Camas School District.

Youth Commission seeks representatives

The Clark County Youth Commission, a group of 30 individuals who serve as a voice for area youth, is seeking 11 representatives to fill its roster. The group communicates with the Clark County Board of Commissioners, county departments and community organizations. One volunteer is needed in each area including Washougal, Camas, Ridgefield, Woodland and/or Green Mountain. In Woodland, representatives must live in Clark County.

The commission is seeking members who are representative of the area’s wide ranging diversity and multiple cultures. Members range from age 11 to 19.

Those selected to serve must commit to two monthly meetings plus additional subcommittee work amounting to approximately eight hours of work or more per month.

To be considered, candidates must complete an application and interview for the position. Nomination forms may be downloaded at: http://www.clark.wa.gov/mental-health/. The deadline for submission of applications is Friday.

Vancouver Farmers Market offers scholarships

The Vancouver Farmers Market plans to offer a total of $5,000 in scholarship funding to post-secondary students for the 2011-12 school year.

Applications from graduating seniors in high school or college students will be accepted until 5 p.m., Friday, July 1.
