WWU releases winter quarter dean’s list

Camas resident Hannah Glynne Manning has been named to the winter quarter 2011 honor roll at Western Washington University.

To be named to the list, students must take at least 14 graded credit hours during a quarter and be in the top 10 percent of their class.

Clark College to host career fair

Clark College will host a Health Careers Job Fair from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday, June 1 for students and members of the community in Clark’s Gaiser Student Center, 1933 Fort Vancouver Way.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 10 of the 20 fastest growing occupations will be related to health care.

No registration is required to attend the career fair. Driving directions and parking maps are available at www.clark.edu/maps.

“Visitors will have the opportunity to network with area employers,” Career Services Director Edie Blakley said.

“They’ll be able to meet with industry professionals in a relaxed atmosphere, asking questions about current jobs as well as future openings. We are encouraging guests to bring resumes and dress for success since they’ll be meeting with potential employers.”

Companies currently scheduled to attend include Carolee’s at Ridgefield, Cascade Park Care Center, Free Clinic of Southwest Washington, Kool Smiles, Net Rx, Northwest Natural Products, Prestige Care, Southwest Medical Group, Synergy Home Care and Vancouver Radiologists.

Middle- and high-school students showcase their work at WSU

Students participating in the Partners in Discovery of the Columbia River Watershed GK-12 Project from Battle Ground, Camas, La Center and Vancouver school districts will showcase their work tonight at Washington State University Vancouver.

The event, featuring work from sixth- through ninth-graders, will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Firstenburg Student Commons and the Administration building, rooms 129 and 130 at Washington State University Vancouver.

It is located at 14204 N.E. Salmon Creek Ave.

This event is free and open to the public. Parking is free. It will feature kid-designed displays that demonstrate what students have learned in science this year and how it connects to the Columbia River Watershed. Tours of WSU Vancouver science labs and the campus will also be available.

The Partners in Discovery of the Columbia River Watershed GK-12 Project establishes year-long, one-on-one partnerships between WSU Vancouver environmental science graduate student fellows and science teachers and their students.

The objective is to bring scientific research and inquiry into classrooms. Together the fellows, teachers and students investigate the natural world.

This is the third year of a five-year project funded by a $2.7 million grant from the National Science Foundation.

The Partners in Discovery GK-12 Project focuses on the implications of growth and change on the Columbia River and its watershed.

Existing curricula is built upon and supplemented with inquiry-based activities and lessons specifically related to the Columbia River Watershed.

Everything the WSU Vancouver fellows bring into the classrooms aligns with both Washington state and national science standards.

Community theater hosting auditions

Christian Community Theater, a division of Christian Youth Theater, is holding auditions for its first summer show, “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat,” by Andrew Lloyd Webber.

Auditions will be held in Vancouver from 5 to 9 p.m. on Monday June 6, Tuesday, June 7 and Wednesday, June 8. Auditions are open to those 8 years old through adult.

Performances will be Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, Aug. 5 – 14 at the Washburn Performing Arts Center at Washougal High School.

Rehearsals will be held in Vancouver on Thursday evenings from 6 to 10 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 to 2 p.m. beginning June 16.

Holland graduates from Loyola University

Britney Holland, daughter of Robert Holland of Washougal, graduated May 9 from Loyola Marymount University in Lose Angeles with a master’s degree in international business administration.

She is finishing up her degree with a three-week study in China and India. After she returns, Holland will be moving to Washington, D.C., to begin employment.

Callison earns dean’s list honors

Carissa Callison, a resident of Washougal, made the dean’s list for the spring 2011 semester at the University of Montana Western.

The dean’s list includes students who achieved a 3.33 GPA or better.

Sullivan makes dean’s list at University of Portland

Devon Sullivan, a 2009 graduate of Washougal High School, made the dean’s list for both the fall and spring semesters at the University of Portland.

To make the list, a student must have at least a 3.5 GPA and be taking 12 credit hours.

Sullivan is studying civil engineering with an emphasis in geotechnical and structural engineering.
