Time capsule ceremony is Sunday

A time capsule containing mementoes reflecting the people and places of the Washougal community will be buried during a ceremony on Sunday, at Washougal High School.

The event will take place from 2 to 2:30 p.m., at the WHS commons near the courtyard. Speakers will include Washougal residents Bernice Pluchos and Roger Daniels, as well as student Emily Carroll, who is organizing the event as part of her senior project.

Panther Players perform ‘Moon Over Buffalo’

The Washougal High School Panther Players will perform Ken Ludwig’s “Moon Over Buffalo” on Friday and Saturday.

The production, a comic farce, is about a group of actors backstage in Buffalo, N.Y., in 1953. The fast-paced, witty comedy has some adult themes, so it is not suitable for young children.

Tickets can be purchased at the door for $5 for adults and $3 for students and senior citizens. Entry is free with a WHS arts pass.

Kindergarten roundup set

Gause, Cape Horn-Skye and Hathaway elementary schools will host a kindergarten roundup from Monday, May 2 to Friday, May 6, from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day.

Children entering kindergarten must be 5 years old on or before Aug. 31, 2011, to register. Parents should visit the school in which their child will attend to compete registration, and bring birth certificates and immunization records.

Bookmark design winners named

The winner’s of the Washougal Community Library’s annual bookmark celebration were announced.

The event was held April 16, at the library. Finalists received a certificate and his or her original design bookmark framed, while honorable mention winners earned a certificate.

Finalists — Kindergarten: Brayden Davis (River HomeLink); First Grade: Molly Rabus (Gause Elementary School); Second Grade: Grace Louise Janku (Cedar Tree School); Third grade: Katie McNeal (Hathaway Elementary School); Fourth grade: Bayli Gale (Hathaway); Fifth Grade: Marlessa Davis (home school); Sixth Grade: Kendra M. Horvath (Skyridge Middle School); and Allysa Browne (home school); Eighth-grade: Kaylani Craig (The Ideal School).

Student takes third at Geo Bee

Satya Hariharan, a seventh-grade student at Skyridge Middle School in Camas, won third place at the Washington State level of the recent National Geographic Bee Competition.

The event was held earlier this month at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma. Following Hariharan’s school-level win in January, he took a written test and qualified to participate at the state level which included 100 fourth- to eighth-grade students from across Washington.

Through rounds of elimination the number of participants decreased to 10, and was then narrowed to three. The final contenders competed in four difficult rounds of competition. Hariharan received a $50 reward and “The Complete National Geographic” on DVD in recognition of his outstanding performance.

Skills Center barbecue will sizzle

The Clark County Skills Center will present its annual Old Fashioned Barbecue Dinner, Friday May 13, at 6:30 p.m., in the Skills Center Restaurant, 12200 N.E. 28th St.,Vancouver.

The menu will feature Andrew’s famous barbecue ribs, country-fried chicken, corn bread, baked beans, macaroni and cheese, potato salad, fresh fruit, vegetable trays with dip, caramel apple pie, strawberry shortcake and country lemonade. The Puddle Town Ramblers will provide live music.

Opened in 1983, the Clark County Skills Center is owned and operated by 10 southwest Washington school districts, including Camas and Washougal. It provides technical and professional training programs that prepare Clark County high school and college students for the workforce.

Locals make EWU dean’s list

Several students from Camas and Washougal were named to the winter quarter 2011 dean’s list at Eastern Washington University. To be named to the list, students must earn at least a 3.5 GPA and take at least 12 graded credits. Students include:

Camas: Haley Adamson, Patrick McHugh, Keele Roberts, Edward Russell, Christopher Sanchez, Talyor Swoverland and Jessie Tai.

Washougal: Joshua Metcalf, Brittany Shelley and Anastasia Xiong.

Students land on dean’s list

Students from the Camas and Washougal areas have been named to the dean’s list at the University of Washington for winter quarter. To qualify for the dean’s list, a student must have completed at least 12 graded credits and have a GPA of at least 3.5.

Students from Camas include Lukas Zachary Barlas, Geoffrey Stephen Broschart, Christopher Ian Charlson, Sean Zhang Cowan, Rona Ding, Peter Harrison Englund, Michelle Le Hoang, Blair Matthew Hunter, Emily Anne Johnson, Jaimee Marie Johnson, Mckenzie Joann Kaphammer, Michael Jordan Lukins, Laura Beth Mulholland, Peter Shevlin Orchard, Brent Anthony Richards, Staehli Koryn Ross, Corbin Sanders Schweitzer, Brent Allen Jr Stewart, Cody Michael Suhr, Robyn Lee Wichert, Rachel Anne Wolk and Linda Lee Zhang.

Washougal students include Chad Samuel Aller, Jona Leigh Ensley, Reiner Larkin Hershaw, Chloe Leslie Jackson and Scott Jeff Powell.

Locals earn spots on honor roll

Several local residents have been named to the honor roll at Central Washington University for winter quarter 2011. To be named to the honor roll, students must earn at least a 3.5 GPA and take at least 12 graded credits.

Camas students include Shelby Bodily, Trent Harris, Seanna Pitassi, Kaitlin Ramey and Kaylen Rich.

Washougal students include Courtney Carnes, Krista Chase and Grant Ziegler.

Hathaway students are finalists in bookmark contest

Hathaway third-grader Katie McNeil and fourth-grader Bayli Gale were honored recently for being named finalists in the Fort Vancouver Regional Library bookmark contest. Their bookmarks, along with the other finalists, will be available at the Washougal Community Library and other local libraries.
