Sports Camas and Washougal track and field athletes rose to the occasion against 16 of the best high schools in Southwest Washington Saturday, at the Tiger Invitational in Battle Ground.
The Papermaker girls captured the first place trophy, and the Camas boys finished in fourth place.
“It’s fun for all of the kids in the county to face each other more than once a year,” said Camas head girls coach Alisa Wise. “Track is growing in Southwest Washington. These kids are turning heads, and it’s exciting. We don’t have to travel far to get the competition we need. It’s right in our backyard.”
Megan Kelley claimed first place in the 200-meter dash (26.51 seconds), second place in the 400 (58.6 seconds) and second place in the long jump (16 feet, 1 inch). Kelley, Sara Slayton, Austen Reiter and Ciara Klein earned first in the 1,600 relay (4:07.04). Skyview won the race, but was later disqualified. Wise said one of the Skyview runners crossed into Kelley’s lane during the final hand off.
Slayton took second place in the 300 hurdles (47.64) and third in the 100 hurdles (17.02). Camille Parsons (5:16.81) and Megan Napier (5:27.07) clinched second and third in the 1,600. Lauren Neff earned second in the high jump (5-1) and fourth in the triple jump (32-31/2). Reiter (2:24.9) and Alex Dombek (2:26.48) notched third and fourth in the 800. Klein finished fourth in the 100 (13.11), 200 (27.55) and the 400 (1:03.04). Napier (11:59.12) and Parsons (11:59.52) placed fourth and fifth in the 3,200.
