On the sidelines goes virtual

Welcome to the first online report from the sidelines.

The Camas High School football team opened league with a 27-14 victory over Mountain View Friday, at McKenzie Stadium.

The Papermakers rolled to a 20-0 lead in the first half, before allowing the Thunder the strike for a touchdown just before halftime. Mountain View opened the third quarter on a sustaining drive, which lasted nearly six minutes before Camas got the ball back on an interception. It only took the Papermakers about two more minutes to score again.

The Thunder added seven more hard-earned points during the final minutes of the game. Had Mountain View scored a touchdown off a fumbled punt recovered in close range on the series before, Camas might have been sweating a lot more. The touchdown in the final minutes would have brought the Thunder within six. At that point, they would have probably tried an onside kick. Had they recovered, there still might have been time to go for the win.

Instead, Mountain View missed a field goal. Camas remained in the driver’s seat, and ran the clock out.

That’s Zack with a “K”

You would think a Papermaker who scores three touchdowns at Qwest Field would have his name spelled correctly in the paper. Sorry Zack Marshall. We’ll get it right tonight.

And we better, because Marshall just scored three more touchdowns. He had a 30-yard mad dash to the end zone erased on blocking penalty. On the next snap, Marshall did the same thing. He just had to run five more yards.

“We are Washougal”

Any one remember the last time the Washougal High School football team started a season with two wins? Longer than this Post-Record sports reporter has been around, and this is my sixth fall on the sidelines.

Driving deeper into the Gorge, the Panthers defeated White Salmon 42-7 Friday. Quarterback Colton Sullivan dished out three touchdown passes, two to Sam O’Hara and one to Nathan Adams. O’Hara had a 74-yard touchdown reception and 55-yard touchdown run. On defense, Washougal racked up six sacks and recovered three fumbles.

Home openers

Stay in town and watch some exciting football next Friday. Camas hosts Columbia River in the grand opening of the new Doc Harris Stadium. Washougal welcomes Fort Vancouver to Fishback Stadium. Both games begin at 7 p.m.

See you on the sidelines.
