Latest News, Schools, Washougal The Washougal High School (WHS) drama department will present “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” at 7 p.m. Friday, May 10; Saturday, May 11; Friday, May 17; and Saturday, May 18; and 1 p.m. Saturday, May 18, at the Washburn Performing Arts Center.
“This is a newer version that was just released for high school performances a few months ago. It was on Broadway from 2017 to 2019,” WHS drama teacher Kelly Gregersen said. “The students saw that this was being released and asked if it could be included in the shows they voted on, and it won. This was far and away the show the kids wanted to do the most. Right now, I think the kids are really enjoying the fanciful elements of the show — this is so over-the-top that they can really be creative with their choices. There is a lot to build and create, but it’s coming along well.”
The story features the adventures of a young boy named Charlie Bucket inside the chocolate factory of eccentric chocolatier Willy Wonka.
“I think audiences can walk away with both a great story and great songs, and a message that the quality of our character is more important than any external wealth or success,” Gregersen said. “There will be surprises for people who know the story from other sources and a great retelling for those who have never experienced any form of the story.’”
Tickets will cost $10 and will be available at the door.
