The East County Fire and Rescue (ECFR) District has received a $242,225 Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for installation of source capture diesel-exhaust extraction systems at three of its fire stations.
Diesel exhaust has been identified as a human carcinogen. Capture of diesel exhaust produced by fire apparatus inside fire stations is a significant step forward in reducing firefighters’ cancer risk, according to a news release by ECFR.
This grant award also pays for training all full-time ECFR firefighters in incident command and provides the resources necessary to establish a command training center for initial and ongoing incident management continuing education.
