The 2023 Washougal Youth Arts Month celebration, coordinated by the Washougal School District and the Washougal Arts and Culture Alliance (WACA), kicks off this week, featuring a variety of events and activities showcasing many forms of artwork by Washougal youth.

“The packed schedule of Washougal Youth Arts Month programs this year offers something for everyone to enjoy and showcases the many talents of Washougal kids as they learn and grow,” said Alice Yang, an art teacher at Cape Horn-Skye Elementary and Canyon Creek Middle schools.

Washougal Mayor David Stuebe signed a proclamation declaring March as “Youth Arts Month” in Washougal during a Council meeting on Monday, Feb. 27, and the Washougal School Board planned to issue a resolution supporting the celebration during its meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 28. “Washougal Youth Arts Month is an important opportunity to work alongside our wonderful partners to support youth creativity, innovation and passion for learning,” said Washougal School DIstrict Superintendent Mary Templeton.

The celebration will be highlighted by the Washougal Youth Arts Month Gallery, which will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday through Friday, March 15-17, and from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday, March 18, at the Washougal Town Square.

The gallery will include multimedia, watercolor, clay, video, photography, metal and wood student-crafted pieces.

The Paint Roller, a Washougal-based mobile paint party business, will hold children’s rock painting events from noon to 5 p.m. every Saturday in March at Reflection Plaza in downtown Washougal.

“The artists, musicians and actors of tomorrow are in our schools today,” Washougal School Board and WACA board member Chuck Carpenter said. “In March, there are a lot of opportunities to enjoy their creativity. I hope everyone joins in the applause.”
