Mt. Pleasant School closed due to ‘substantial water leak’

The Mt. Pleasant School in east Washougal is closed today and undergoing emergency repairs for what Principal Cathy Lehman described in a letter to Mt. Pleasant families sent Wednesday, Jan. 4, as “a substantial water leak with tree roots involved” near the school’s pump house off Turk Road. 

Administrators for the small Skamania County school, which serves 67 students in grades kindergarten through eighth grades, announced Tuesday, Jan. 3, they planned to have a two-hour delay the next morning. 

“We have been losing water pressure all day today,” Lehmann told Mt. Pleasant families Tuesday, adding that a leak-detection company was set to inspect the school’s water lines early Wednesday morning. 

The school remained closed Wednesday, and Lehmann told families that work crews would be onsite Thursday to repair the water leak. 

“The county was very helpful today to move this project forward as an emergency repair and they have already approved the work area for us,” Lehmann said in her statement to Mt. Pleasant families. 

She added that Mt. Pleasant administrators are “very hopeful” the repairs will be completed in time for the school to open on Friday, Jan. 6, but said families should continue checking their email accounts and the school’s website for updates.
