City of Washougal applies for grant to improve Hamllik Park

The Washougal City Council approved a resolution authorizing the City of Washougal to apply for a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) for upgrades to Hamllik Park on Monday, Oct. 24.

The city is asking for $129,000 for the purchase and installation of a full-court basketball playing surface, Americans With Disabilities Act-compliant sidewalks, and new baseball/softball dugouts, as well as improvements to the park’s bike track.

The city will apply the $50,000 that it received from the CDBG program earlier this year for a half-court basketball playing surface to the project, which it estimates will cost $239,999.

“This is kind of complicated, because we did ask for money in 2022,” Michelle Wright, the city’s public works business administrator, said during a workshop session on Monday, Oct. 10. “About two years ago, we asked for a CDBG grant for a half-basketball court, playground, shelter, and picnic table upgrades,” “But (due to) COVID, we were only able to do some of the projects that we had anticipated doing, so we are asking for additional funding for a few more improvements in 2023.”
