The city of Washougal will hold its second annual National Night Out event from 7 to 10 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 2, at Hathaway Park, 799 25th St., Washougal.

Event attendees are encouraged to bring a new youth bicycle helmet to the event for donation. Washougal police officers will distribute the helmets to Washougal children throughout the summer.

Helmet donors will receive an opportunity to “dunk” Washougal Police Captain Zane Freschette in a dunk tank.

“We continue to look for creative ways to engage Washougal residents, and the dunk tank is another great opportunity to deepen those relationships we’ve started cultivating,” Washougal’s community engagement manager, Rose Jewell, said.

The event will feature ice cream, a presentation of the 2016 Disney movie “Zootopia,” free giveaways, a “Chalk the Walk” activity with the Unite! Washougal Community Coalition, safety demonstrations and a “selfie” station to take photos.

National Night Out is an annual community-building campaign that promotes strong police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make neighborhoods safer, more caring places to live and work. Neighbors throughout Washougal and across the United States are asked to lock their doors, turn on their front porch lights and spend the evening outside with neighbors and law enforcement officers.

“National Night Out is one small part of our overarching goal to enhance community engagement. This is a time to strengthen police-community relationships and meet your neighbors in a fun, welcoming environment,” said Washougal Police Chief Wendi Steinbronn.
