Latest News, News City of Washougal leaders are reminding residents that only “safe and sane” fireworks are permitted to be discharged on Friday, Dec. 31, for New Year’s celebrations.
“(‘Safe and sane’ fireworks are) those that are neither projectile nor explosive — basically anything that doesn’t leave the ground,” a news release states. “This includes fountains, sparklers, smokeballs, snake-type fireworks, ground-spinning fireworks, pinwheels and toy-trick noisemakers.”
Fireworks “that fly, explode or travel more than 1 foot into the air or more than 6 feet on the ground,” including salutes, chasers, rockets, aerial missiles, spinners, mortars and Roman candles, are not permitted, according to the news release.
The city is allowing fireworks to be sold from noon to 11 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 30, and Friday, Dec. 31, and used from 6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 31, to 1 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 1.
Violators will be issued civil infractions and fines of $250 (first offense), $500 (second offense), $750 (third offense) or $1,000 (each subsequent offense within a three-year period).
In addition, any illegal fireworks may be seized, according to the news release.
