Camas High names Athletes of the Year

Jake Blair recovered from shoulder injury to lead the Camas High School football and baseball teams to successful seasons. Shealyne McGee performed at an elite level in two sports simultaneously.

For their efforts, Blair and McGee were named as the Papermakers’ 2020-21 male and female scholar-athletes of the year during a ceremony at the school on Thursday, June 3.

Blair registered 978 passing yards, eight passing touchdowns, 243 rushing yards and five rushing touchdowns during the Papermakers’ five-game football season. He then moved to the baseball diamond, where he hit .275 with one home run, 10 walks and 13 runs scored in 16 games as Camas High’s starting shortstop.

McGee did double-duty for the Papermakers’ gymnastics and track and field teams, which both competed in the spring as part of the 4A Greater St. Helens League’s modified season schedule. She took first place in the all-around event at three of her five gymnastics meets and won the pole vault competition at the 4A/3A District 1 track and field meet with a leap of 11 feet, 6 inches. Her third sport, diving, was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Blair, who will play football for Oregon State University in Corvallis, Oregon, and McGee, who will join the University of Montana’s track and field squad in Missoula, Montana, were two of 12 college-bound senior athletes who were recognized at the ceremony.
