One dead, one injured in plane crash at Grove Field near Camas

Updated April 29, 2021 with identity of Vancouver man killed in crash.

One person died and another was injured after a small plane crashed into a hangar at Grove Field Airport near Camas on Wednesday, April 21. 

First responders from East County Fire and Rescue and the Camas-Washougal Fire Department responded to the small airfield north of Camas at 3:13 p.m. April 21.  

ECFR Fire Chief Mike Carnes said the small aircraft, a vintage BT-13, crashed into a hangar on the northwestern end of the airfield. 

The pilot and owner of the plane, later identified as Mark L. Lewallen, 69, of Vancouver, died in the crash. A second person, riding in the rear of the aircraft, was transported by ambulance to a local hospital with traumatic injuries. 

Grove Field, located at 632 N.E. 267th Ave., about three miles north of Camas, is owned and operated by the Port of Camas-Washougal. 

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the cause of the crash.
