More than 200 runners competed in the fifth annual Scary Run in Washougal on Oct. 31.
Live 5K and 10K races began and ended at Reflection Plaza in downtown Washougal.
The event, put on by Vancouver-based WhyRacing Events, encourages, doesn’t require, its runners to wear Halloween costumes. But this year, the event featured a different look thanks to additional safety protocols implemented to stop the spread of COVID-19.
Runners were out in waves — about three runners every minute from 8a.m. to 11 a.m. — to ensure social distancing. They weren’t required to wear masks while on the course, but were be asked to cover their faces before and after their races. They were also presented with pre-race temperature checks, health questionnaires and sanitation stations. Spectators were limited and asked to observe distance protocols if they stood along the course.
WhyRacing Events holds 12 running events every year to raise money for local high school sports programs and nonprofit organizations. Up to this point, all 11 of WhyRacing’s running and multi events in 2020 had been held virtually.
The Scary Run also offered a virtual event from Oct. 25-31.
