Sports briefs for Oct. 10: CHS football wins homecoming game

The undefeated Camas High School (CHS) football team will play host to a tough Sumner High School squad on Friday, Oct. 11.

The Spartans (4-1) are a formidable threat, according to Papermakers coach Jon Eagle.

“(They’re) very physical and well coached. Most of their players go one way,” he said. “They run the ball well and have a great defense.”

CHS, ranked fourth in the latest Associated Press 4A state poll, is coming off a 65-7 homecoming win over Heritage High School on Friday, Oct. 4. The rout on the field, homecoming festivities and halftime fireworks all made for a special night for CHS students and fans.

The Papermakers’ (5-0) starters played only in the first half, but quarterback Jake Blair racked up 243 yards and four touchdowns before he took a seat as CHS displayed its depth in the second half.

After the game, Blair praised his team’s defensive performance.

“Our defense getting so many stops really helped our offense get rhythm,” he said, “so from there we really just took over the game, and the rest is history.”

CHS wide receiver Jackson Clemmer finished with five catches for 99 yards and two touchdowns.

Charlie Bump returned the second-half kickoff 70 yards for a touchdown, and running back Jacques Badolato-Birdsell had 60 yards rushing and 57 yards receiving with three touchdowns for the Papermakers.

WHS loses Bea to injury, game to Ridgefield

The Washougal High School (WHS) football team is gearing up to take on Columbia River High School (CRHS) at Fishback Stadium in Washougal on Friday, Oct. 11.

The Chieftains (2-3) beat Mark Morris High School 28-21 in their last game, while the Panthers (2-3) suffered a stinging 24-21 loss to Ridgefield High School in front of an overflowing homecoming crowd on Friday, Oct. 4.

On the last drive of the first half, Brevan Bea, the Panthers’ leading tackler and rusher/receiver, left the game after taking a hard shot to the ribs while catching a pass. He did not return in the second half.

The game was close throughout, with WHS quarterback Dalton Payne throwing for 347 yards. Running back Gavin Multer scored both of the Panthers’ touchdowns in the second half, including a 44-yard run to give WHS the lead in the third quarter.

Penalties were a problem for the Panthers, pushing them out of the red zone several times in the first half.

CHS girls soccer keeps rolling

The CHS girls soccer team beat Skyview High School 1-0 on Monday, Oct. 7 to remain unbeaten in 4A Greater St. Helens League play.

Jasmine Whittington scored the game’s only goal in the first half for the Papermakers (8-2 overall, 3-0 league).

Camas boys tennis team’s undefeated streak ends

Shiva Narayanan and Nathan Loucks won their singles matches in two sets, but the CHS boys tennis squad’s doubles teams lost their matches, and Skyview High School went on to post a 4-2 win on Monday, Oct. 7.

The loss was the Papermakers’ (5-1 overall, 2-1 league) first of the season.

Washougal girls slowpitch softball dominates Evergreen

The inaugural season for WHS slowpitch softball team continues to be a big success as the Panthers posted a 17-2 victory over Evergreen High School on Monday, Oct. 7.

Chloe Johnson, Peyton Robb and Audrey Thompson each recorded multiple hits for WHS, (5-1).

Camas volleyball beats rival Union

The CHS volleyball team topped visiting Union High School 25-21, 25-10, 25-13 on Monday, Oct. 7.

Emma Villaluz led the way for the Papermakers (6-1) with 11 kills, one block, two aces and 11 digs.
