Camas spoils Skyview’s bid to end the streak

A “Taylor-Trevor” double play set the tone for the Papermakers Friday, at Kiggins Bowl.

Taylor Adams and Trevor Bentley, two outfielders on the Camas High School baseball team, proved they can be handy defenders for the Papermakers in football.

After Camas stuffed three runs by Skyview in front of the goal line, the Storm elected to go for it on fourth down and tried a pass. Adams tipped the ball up, Bentley intercepted the pass in the end zone and headed 100 yards for home to give Camas a 14-0 advantage in the first quarter.

“It was kind of shocking, to be honest,” Adams said. “At one moment, we’re just trying to not let them score. And next moment, he’s going 99 yards the other way. I think that just set the momentum going the right way, and we just carried it through the rest of the game.”

“My heart was pounding. I was so excited,” Bentley said. “Honestly, I almost ran out of my shoes.”

Skyview hung with Camas in the first half, and scored a touchdown on the first drive of the third quarter to get within eight points. Andrew Boyle kicked a 39-yard field goal to put the Papermakers up by 11. The Camas defense then stopped the Storm four times, including two fourth-down stands in the fourth quarter.

“All we were thinking was, ‘Let’s get ’em!’ Just get them out of there and get our offense back on the field,” said linebacker Semisi Schultz. “When we needed a big play, we got it. We got picks, we got sacks, we got tackles. That’s what we did.”

The Papermakers got the ball back on the 19-yard line with less than four minutes left in the game. After a few short plays to keep the clock moving, Will Schultz broke free for a 13-yard touchdown run to seal the victory for the Papermakers. He said that breakaway was all because of the offensive linemen.

Adams put the finishing touches on the win for Camas with an interception.

“Coach Eagle had a motto. He said the team that’s going to win is the team that has the most dog,” Adams said. “Pursuing to the ball, hitting hard and playing through the whistle. All that stuff. We really took that to heart in this game.”

On Friday, Camas showed it is still the class of the 4A Greater St. Helens League. The Papermakers have won 56 straight in-season games. Skyview was the last team to beat them, at Kiggins Bowl back in 2011.

The streak lives on … and so does the heart of this brotherhood.

“I’ll definitely remember the fight, the game, the experience and the crowd,” Semisi Schultz said. “I loved it.”

Adams summarizes his Camas days perfectly.

“Growing up in this town, playing football with these guys, and now going to high school together and still playing the game that we love, I couldn’t be more proud.”
