Camas, Union soccer teams finish in a tie

Nothing was settled after 90 minutes of soccer between the Camas and Union girls teams Tuesday, at Doc Harris Stadium. The game ended in a 1-1 stalemate.

“We definitely showed heart. It was a good battle by both teams, and I’m really proud of Camas soccer,” said team captain Perri Belzer.

The Titans struck the goal first in the 17th minute on a corner kick scored by Kiani Pandoliano that landed in the far side of the net, untouched.

Down 1-0 at halftime, Camas defender Aliya Ponder relayed the message from head coach Roland Minder.

“Just play as a team. Not one individual on our team sticks out. If we all work as a team, we can all get that one goal,” she said.

The Papermakers tied the score with 24 minutes left in regulation, when Maddie Kemp finished off a cross by Jazzy Paulson.

“I’m just glad (that goal) came. It was a really nice ball by Jazzy,” Kemp said. “Next time, it’s going to be a battle. It’s always sad to end in a tie, but it brings our intensity up for next time.”

Camas couldn’t get comfortable on the attack. Minder credited Union for applying constant pressure.

“Credit to them,” he said. “We got hardly any shots on goal. We got hardly any looks at goal. They just totally kept us away from goal.”

Minder added that all of the players on the backline stepped up. Goalkeeper Falissitie DePasquale made three saves, including a big one right off the bat in overtime.

“(Union is) picked by more people to win the league, so I thought we made a good stand,” Minder said. “Coming back from being down, I think, is a good sign because that shows character. We just have to continue building from here.”
