Voters have until 8 p.m. tomorrow night to cast their votes in the Aug. 1, 2017 Primary and Special Election.

Clark County Elections workers have received 34,621 ballots as of this afternoon, which means fewer than 15 percent of the county’s 238,870 eligible voters have turned in ballots for the primary election.

Many Clark County voters tend to wait until the actual election day to cast their votes. In last year’s August primary and special election, 27 percent of eligible voters cast ballots and 43 percent voted on the actual election day.

The election will determine candidates for two critical government positions in Camas-Washougal — including the Camas City Council’s Ward 1, Position 2 seat and the Washougal City Council’s Position 6 seat.

Incumbent Camas City Councilwoman Melissa Smith is competing against two challengers — Emilia Brasier and Amanda Stamness — for the council seat Smith has held since 2004. In Washougal, three newcomers — Nettie Morris, Adam Philbin and Julie Russell — are vying for City Councilman Dave Shoemaker’s seat. Shoemaker decided this spring to not run for re-election, after serving two terms on the Washougal City Council.

The Aug. 1 Primary Election ballot also includes races in Vancouver, La Center and Woodland, as well as in the Evergreen, Vancouver and Hockinson school districts and the Clark Regional Wastewater District. The town of Yacolt, Clark County Fire & Rescue and Clark County Emergency Medical Services all have ballot measures included in the Aug. 1 primary.

Voters who wish to cast their ballots in the Aug. 1 Primary Election must have their ballots postmarked by Tuesday, Aug. 1, or drop their ballots in a ballot box by 8 p.m. tomorrow night.

There are six permanent, 24-hour ballot boxes in the county, including the box at the Camas Post Office at 440 N.E. Fifth Ave.

Election workers will accept ballots from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. tomorrow, Tuesday, Aug. 1, at several locations throughout the county, including three Camas-Washougal locations:

  • Grace Foursquare Gospel Church at 717 S.E. Everett Road, Camas
  • Dorothy Fox Elementary School at 2623 N.W. Sierra St., Camas
  • Washougal Community Center, 1681 “C” St., Washougal

Voters who are mailing their ballots must have them postmarked by Tuesday, Aug. 1. For more information about the election, or to view other Clark County drop-box locations, visit www.clark.wa.gov/elections/august-2017-primary-information.

The Post-Record will post election results online tomorrow night, after 8 p.m., and also will cover the election results in the next print edition of the newspaper, which comes out on Thursday, Aug. 3.
