Kids tennis camp will be in August

The annual Washougal High School Kids Tennis camp will run Monday through Thursday, Aug. 7-10 at the WHS tennis courts, 1201 39th St., Washougal.

It is designed for students entering first through eighth grade in the fall.

Students going into first through fifth grade will attend from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., and those entering sixth through eighth grade will attend from 10:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.

The cost is $30 per student, and $25 for each additional student from the same family. Registration begins 30 minutes before camp starts on Monday, Aug. 7.

Members of the high school girls and boys tennis teams, as well as coaching staff, will be on hand to instruct students.

This camp is a fundraiser for the WHS boys and girls tennis teams.

Shoe drive to raise funds for service dog, those in need

Gently used shoes are being collected through May 31 to raise funds for a young boy on the autism spectrum to have his own service dog. Shoe donations also will support microenterprises in developing nations.

“A Canine for Cooper,” in partnership with 4 Paws for Ability, is conducting a shoe drive to raise funds for Cooper’s service dog. The fundraiser is based on the total weight of the shoes collected, as Funds2Orgs will purchase all of the donated footwear. Anyone can help by donating gently worn, used or new shoes.

All donated shoes will then be redistributed throughout the Funds2Orgs network of microenterprise partners in developing nations. Funds2Orgs helps impoverished people start, maintain and grow businesses in countries such as Haiti, Honduras and other nations in Central America and Africa. Proceeds from the shoe sales are used to feed, clothe and house these families.

“We are excited about our shoe drive,” says Cooper’s father, Tim Root. “We know that most people have extra shoes in their closets they would like donate to us and help those less fortunate become self-sufficient. It’s a win-win for everyone.”
