Jump, run, throw

The Papermakers proved they could jump the highest, run the fastest and throw the farthest Saturday, at the Tiger Invitational in Battle Ground.

The Camas girls racked up 123.5 points to win the 22-school track and field meet. Tigard, Oregon, was a distant second with 84 points and Union took third with 82 points.

The Camas boys collected 103 points to rise above league rivals Skyview (94.33), Union (89.33).

“It was really good seeing the team do really well,” said senior distance runner Luke Albert. “Everyone went out there and raced their hearts out, and it paid off.”

Albert, Jackson Lyne, Cade Greseth and Daniel Maton got the Papermakers going by winning the boys distance medley relay with a time of 10 minutes, 50.85 seconds. Lyne completed the first 1,200 meters, Albert followed with a 400, Greseth completed an 800 and Maton finished off the victory with a 1,600.

“Everyone has a different skill set, and you get to showcase that,” Albert said.

“I like that you get to see the differences in pace between each leg of the race,” Lyne said. “You get the really fast 400 and then a slower pace in the last mile. It makes it really exciting in the end.”

Ellie Postma, Madison Child, Brooke Roy and Halle Jenkins made it 2-for-2 for Camas out of the gate by winning the girls distance medley relay in 12:49.3.

Greseth and Maton were just getting started. They grabbed the top two places in the 800 and then helped the Papermakers win the 1,600 relay.

“It was pretty painful,” Greseth said. “To start off the day with a relay, end with a relay and win both was pretty special.”

Emma Jenkins and Rachel Blair were the top two runners in the girls 1,600. Emma Jenkins, Child and Roy finished top three in the 3,200.

“You just have to go into these events and try your hardest. That’s all you can do,” Emma Jenkins said. “It’s so much easier to know these girls are right there next to me.”

Madison Peffers beat 27 competitors in the high jump. She avoided a jump off by clearing 5 feet, 2 inches on her final attempt.

“It was a good accomplishment. A good start to a great season,” Peffers said.

Camas throwers Nkem Aduka and Maggie Wells fought through the slick conditions in the ring. Wells earned second in the shot put and fourth in the discus. Aduka took second in the discus and fourth in the shot put.

Cooper McNatt had a field day. The CHS senior finished fourth in the javelin, fourth in the triple jump and seventh in the long jump.

William Sun claimed second place in the 300 hurdles and fourth place in the 110 hurdles. Zachary Terry zipped to second place in the 200, Lyne clinched third in the 3,200 and David Connell earned fourth in the 3,200. Terry, Blake Derringer, Nathan Butterfield and Jason Driver notched third in the 400 relay.

Postma placed second in the girls 800. Postma, Madeline Shepard, Halle Jenkins and Blair grabbed second place in the 1,600 relay. Ahmika Kluka notched third in the javelin.
