The Washougal School Board has approved placing two replacement levies on the Feb. 14, 2017 ballot.

At its regular meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 22, the board approved a three-year, $23.2 million replacement maintenance and operations levy and $2.4 million technology levy.

The levies would replace the current ones, which are set to expire Dec. 31, 2017.

The last levies were approved by voters in the February 2014 election.

The M & O levy funds services and operations not funded by the state or federal government, which include health and safety provisions, instructional materials, athletics and activities, student learning and staffing, and operations and maintenance.

Proposed levy rates will remain flat over three years, 2018 to 2020, at $2.91 per $1,000 of assessed value.

Technology levy dollars pay for the district’s 1-to-1 tablet initiative, computers and devices, classroom instructional technology, professional development and coaching, technology infrastructure, and curriculum and software.

“With the expiration of the district’s current three-year levies, the money which will be available for the general fund will be insufficient to meet the educational needs of our students, maintain current educational program funding levels and support programs,” said Ron Dinius, board president. “Replacement levies must be approved to provide money to meet those expenses.”

Proposed technology levy rates will also remain flat, at $.30 per $1,000 of assessed value.
