Pearson Field to host winter break camps

Historic Pearson Field in Vancouver will host its first-ever aviation winter break camps for students in first- through fourth-grade.

Kids will test their aeronautical skills at the whirly-gig table, and engineer structures with clothespins and craft sticks.

Some other activities include building a wave bottle and making it rain in a jar.

“This is an exciting opportunity for budding scientists to spend the morning with us and explore aviation through STEM-based, hands-on activities,” said Deborah Bessette, aviation programs coordinator at the Pearson Field Education Center. “Glider building is always popular.”

The first session will run Tuesday, Dec. 20 through Friday, Dec. 23 from 9 a.m. to noon. The second session will run Tuesday, Dec. 27 through Friday, Dec. 30 from 9 a.m. to noon. The cost is $40 per day or $140 for four consecutive days. To register, call 992-1815.

Camas resident is WGU Washington scholarship recipient

Kathleen Schoene of Camas is the recipient of the WGU Washington Community College graduate scholarship.

WGU Washington is a nonprofit, online university based in Kent that offers bachelor and master’s degrees in a variety of subjects.

Scholarships are available for eligible students.

“All of WGU Washington’s scholarship recipients have demonstrated incredible drive and commitment to succeed,” said Chancellor Jean Floten. “Earning a college degree, particularly as a mid-career adult, is difficult. We’re proud to award these scholarships and recognize those who have made the brave choice to go back to school.”

WGU Washington was established by the State Legislature in 2011 in partnership with nationally recognized and accredited Western Governors University to expand access to higher education for Washington residents.

CEF sets annual phone-a-thon

Camas Educational Foundation will host its annual phone-a-thon from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, Nov. 15 to Nov. 17.

Camas School District students will be calling homes to ask for donations. The phone-a-thon is one of two of the non-profit CEF’s major fundraisers throughout the year. The other is an auction and dinner in the spring.

To date, this event has raised more than $260,000 for Camas kids. These donations fund curriculum and special programs for kids at all grade levels and all schools that are not covered by regular school budgets, and range from Science Olympiad to Poetry Alive.
