Goals galore for Camas girls soccer

In the eye of the Storm, Hannah Taie, Sabine Postma and Alyssa Tomasini created the perfect combination for the Papermakers to score a goal.

Taie took the possession away from Skyview, Postma popped the seam and Tomasini threaded the needle and fired the ball into before the Storm could anything to stop it.

“Eighteen seconds on the opposition’s kickoff, I think that’s a record,” said head coach Roland Minder.

Camas never looked back. The Papermakers scored five goals in 24 minutes and held on for a 5-0 victory at Doc Harris Stadium Monday. Tomasini finished with two goals and an assist. Maddie Kemp and Postma each had a goal. Skyview also accidently knocked the ball into its own net off a shot by Perri Belzer.

“That was the first thing Minder said, get a goal right off the bat and then you have the pressure on,” Postma said. “And then we kept it up, and five goals later, it was kind of nice.”

Tomasini scored the first two goals in eight minutes. She said Postma delivered the perfect ball through and set her up for a one-on-one showdown with the keeper.

“I better not shank this,” Tomasini said. “All our hard work our team does, it felt amazing to get it right off the bat.”

Following through awarded Tomasini with another goal. Ellie Echeverio crossed the ball off the goalkeeper’s hands, and Tomasini was right there to chip it into the net. She is up to 14 goals this season, thanks to the creativity of her teammates.

“Honestly, my team’s a good motivation,” Tomasini said. “They play me good balls through and it’s just hard work, I guess.”

Chemistry continues to develop between Tomasini, Kemp and Echeverio up front, and Postma, Taie and Morgan Winston in the middle.

“We’ve got an experienced midfield and they play really well with each other,” Minder said. “I am really pleased with the progress we’re making.”

The backline has also been a force for the Papermakers. Sarah Davidson, Marley LeFore, Ashley Carter and Belzer keep clearing the ball out of danger. If it happens to get past them, goalkeepers Julia Coombs and Karsyn Quade are there to protect the net.

“Every year we say, how are we going to replace the people back there? And then, it just seems to work out,” Minder said. “Both Sarah and Marley have stepped up big time at center back and are working well together. We’re what now, 12 games in and one goal against. That’s crazy.”

Camas already has 11 shutouts this season. Davidson is determined to keep earning those zeros.

“Our goal is to keep it at one and try to break the school record,” she said. “Each player just communicates as we’re playing, so we know where each other is going to be. It’s very important for us to stay organized.”

The Papermakers are 11-0-1 with four league games left to play. Camas faces Heritage Tuesday, Oct. 18, at 5:30 p.m., at McKenzie Stadium. Senior Night is Thursday, Oct. 20, at 7 p.m., against Union, at Doc Harris Stadium.

Minder said it’s tougher to beat teams the second time around. The Papermakers defeated Skyview 4-0 in the first game last season, but then they lost the rematch 2-1.

“Nothing’s won yet. We’ve put ourselves into a good position, but that’s it. A lot of work has to be done,” Minder said. “This team has great potential and we just need to keep it going.”
