Sound the whistle

The new steam whistle at Doc Harris Stadium got a crash course in Camas High School football Friday night, and so did Central Catholic.

Clutch defense by the Papermakers forced the Rams to kick a field goal on the game’s opening drive. And three points is where Central Catholic would stay for the first three quarters, while Camas scored 42 straight. After the Rams earned a touchdown late in the fourth quarter, the Papermakers secured a 42-10 victory.

“They had a lot of talented players. Defensively, I thought we did very good,” said CHS senior linebacker Dylan Ingram. “Marshall [McIvor], Cody [Jackson], Michael [Matthews], everyone. Everyone made good plays. It was just awesome to see. It was a great outcome. I couldn’t be more happy with it.”

New Camas starting quarterback Jack Colletto had a night to remember. The senior threw for 175 yards, including a 14-yard touchdown pass to Drake Owen. Colletto connected with seven different receivers throughout the game. He also ran for 80 yards and two more touchdowns.

“It’s kind of haunted me, whether or not I could be the quarterback of this team,” Colletto said. “At the end of the day, I’m just trying to play like I’m on the playground. Stay loose, have fun and make sure I get everybody involved.”

Offensive linemen Dakota Napierkowski, JT Tumanuvao, Marcus Gray and Caleb Eldred got the Papermakers rolling right out of the gate. Colletto, Matthews and Will Schultz scored touchdowns on the first three drives of the game.

“Going up against a high caliber team like that, I was really pleased,” Tumanuvao said. “A lot of room for improvement, but it was good. Playing fast is key, and just finish blocks.”

Colletto said those bulldozers he lines up behind are big, fast and physical.

“Our O-line is in great shape as well. They can really maintain for four quarters,” he said. “I trust them. I’m not afraid to sit in that pocket at all because I know they’ll have my back.”

Another Papermaker who fed off the blocks was Schultz. He scored two touchdowns, including a 37-yard breakaway into the end zone in the third quarter.

“I’ve been dreaming about this first game,” Schultz said. “Started playing football in eighth grade. Always been to the Camas games growing up. It’s just a whole different world on the field.

“After all the two-a-day practices and putting in tons of hours with your brothers, it just feels nice for all of it to come together and work out for you,” he added. “It is definitely worth all the hours.”

Camas hosts Sherwood Friday, at Doc Harris Stadium. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. The Papermakers travel Davis High School, in Yakima, Sept. 16, and Couer d’Alene, Idaho, Sept. 23.

“There’s no rest,” said head coach Jon Eagle. “If we can stay healthy and continue to get better, we are going to be ready for our league opponents.”
