A wood sculpture by Donald Baiar sits on display. Sculptures depicting birds, fish and mammals will be on display at this weekend's showcase.

Art from the Feather and Quill woodcarving club will be featured for the 29th year at this weekend’s Columbia Flyway Wildlife Show.

The showcase will be held at the Water Resources Education Center, Sept. 10 and 11. It will feature more than 90 artists from the United States and Canada displaying hand carved, textured and painted wood sculptures of birds, fish and mammals.

The event will also offer seminars explaining aspects of woodcarving, and wooden duck decoy competitions in a fountain pool.

Woodcarver Randy Martin has been a member of Feather and Quill for 21 years, and he’s excited to return to the event.

“The venue is wonderful for us,” he said. “We’ve held the show there for about eight or nine years, and it’s been great each time.”

Martin joined Feather and Quill and began woodcarving, somewhat by accident.

Martin took his father, who had been woodcarving for years, to a club meeting to see if he’d be interested in joining. Martin’s father declined, but Martin decided to join and has been in love with woodcarving ever since.

“It just looked like a blast,” he said.

The woodcarving club has focused on wildlife carving since its formation 35 years ago. The original members were carvers of duck decoys used for hunting, and their showcases attracted artists who specialized in carving images of other animals as well.

The Water Resources Education Center is located at 4600 S.E. Columbia Way, in Vancouver. Show hours are from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. Admission is free.
