Business A new president will preside over the Clark County Quilters as the group kicks off its 42nd year in Southwest Washington with its first general meeting of the new season Thursday, Sept. 8, at 6 p.m., at Vancouver Church of Christ, 9019 N.E. 86th St., Vancouver
Colleen Garrison will serve as the guild’s leader for 2016-2017.
Garrison has been a quilter since her grandmother placed a needle and thread in her hand at the age of 4. A native Washingtonian, she graduated from Washington State University, served as a legislative assistant, and then worked for the Department of Social and Health Services for 10 years. For the past 16 years she has been a teacher.
The guest speaker at tonight’s meeting is Rose Hughes, a 20-plus year quilter, who will lecture on, “Embellishment Scavenger Hunt.”
Hughes will teach workshops on Sept. 9 and 10. On Friday, she will talk about her trademark “Fast-Piece Applique” method. Saturday’s workshop is entitled “What’s On Top,” and will cover the addition of embellishments to add drama, whimsy, character and sparkle to quilts.
The cost of each one-day workshop is $60 for members, and $85 for non-members.
Clark County Quilters is a non-profit corporation in Vancouver, established in 1974. The guild is supported by almost 500 members. Membership dues are $25 per year. General meetings are held the second Thursday of each month, September through June.
