Library announces Summer Reading Progam winners

The Camas Public Library has put together the totals from its Summer Reading Program. It drew 2,297 child participants, 328 teens and 139 adults. Total hours read were 32,367. Individual winners are as follows:

Top 10 readers (kids): Chao-yu Lin, Kiara Hansen, Ruby Cowart, Jenny Chernichenko, Yu-Cheng Liang, Dylan Knapp, I-An Lu, Gabe Cowart, Bianca Flores and Lucy Webster.

Top 10 readers (teens): Elise Rasmussen, Abby Camisa, AJ Swan, Nicole Mitchell, Tia Merritt, Sophie Webster, Stella Webster, Madison Koppes, Max Burchell and Megan Cheng.

Bike raffle winners: Hayden Reich and Shalaka Deshpande.

Writing contest open to youth

The Fort Vancouver Regional Library District is hosting a writing contest, open to sixth- through 12th graders who live within, attend school, or are home schooled in the Fort library district boundaries.

Entries can be submitted online through Sunday, Oct. 2 at www.fvrl.org/imagined-ink.

Teen Talk program seeks volunteers

The Clark County TeenTalk program has four spots open for new teen volunteers.

TeenTalk trains volunteers who are 15 to 19 years old, so that they can offer compassion and information to their peers.

Completion of pre-service training classes is required. Once training is completed, volunteers serve as peer counselors weekly for three hours.

Mental health first aid course set

There will be a Youth Mental Health First Aid course on Friday, Sept. 30 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The course teaches attendees a five-step action plan to offer help to people exhibiting the signs and symptoms of a mental illness or a crisis.

Although it is targeted toward youth, organizers say the course is also beneficial to anyone in the community, including first responders, teachers, leaders of faith communities, human resource professionals and concerned citizens.

They can also shop online from home, as the site automatically shares the lists swith national retailers like Target and Staples.

The site includes lists for Canyon Creek Middle School, Cape Horn-Skye Elementary School, Dorothy Fox Elementary, Gause Elementary, Helen Baller Elementary, Lacamas Heights Elementary, Liberty Middle School, Mount Pleasant Elementary, Prune Hill Elementary, Skyridge Middle School, Washougal High School and Woodburn Elementary.

Parents can also print coupons for back-to-school savings.

Auditions open for Junior Symphony of Vancouver

There will be open auditions for orchestral/chamber music instrumentalists for the Junior Symphony of Vancouver on Monday, Sept. 19.

Auditions are by appointment only with application, which is available at www.oregonchamberplayers.org. The concert for this session will be held Saturday, Dec. 10.

Auditions are open to young musicians of southwest Washington and Oregon, in middle school through college. Call 696-4084 for more information.
