Rubino resigns from school board

Karen Rubino is resigning from the Washougal School Board, effective Sept. 27, due to taking a job in Seattle.

The School District is accepting applications to fill the position, which is Director District 4.

Rubino was appointed to the board in 2012.

“It has been a true pleasure to serve and work with an outstanding group of people including the other board members and district staff,” Rubino said in a resignation letter. “The Washougal School Board is a very effective and caring team and I will greatly miss being a part of it. I look forward to the opening of the new schools and continued student success.”

School Board members are responsible for policy and governance of the district, and for providing direction to the superintendent.

Rubino explained that while she continues to live in Washougal, she is currently taking a train to Seattle on Sunday evenings, and not returning until Thursday. School Board meetings take place on Tuesdays.

“It is unfortunate that I am unable to continue on the board,” Rubino said. “In addition to working with a great group of people, it is an exciting time for the district and community with the construction of the new schools.”

Being on a School Board can require several skills including research and patience, but is also rewarding, Rubino noted.

“I found that the time and effort that I put into my work as a board member was rewarded many times over,” she said. “This is a great opportunity to join the board and be part of the continued success of the Washougal School District.”

Applicants for the board must be registered voters and reside within district 4.

The director will serve until the next regular election, November 2017, at which time a successor will be elected for the unexpired term, which ends December 2019.
