Community resource fair set

Hayes Freedom High School will host a community resource fair, open to all students in Clark County.

The fair will be held from noon to 3 pm. Thursday, Sept. 1. and inlcude information from the Camas Public Library, Clark County Teen Talk, YWCA programs, Jack, Will and Rob Boys & Girls Club, East County Family Resource Center, C-Tran, and others.

Hayes Freedom is located at 1919 N.E. Ione St., Camas.

Local student does summer research in New Mexico

Jason Kim, a CHS student, participated in a research program this summer at the New Mexico Institute of Technology.

During the 39 day program, Jason Kim operated a research-grade telescope to take images of a near-earth asteroid, then wrote software to measure its position precisely and calculate its orbital path, including the chance it will impact Earth in the future.

Kim participated in the 58th annual Summer Science Program, and is one of 36 science students who came from around the world.

Since 1959, this program has offered teenagers what may be their first research opportunity. During the program, Kim and fellow students worked closely with university professors, met prominent guest speakers, and took behind-the-scenes tours of local scientific, educational, and cultural sites.

SSP is an independent non-profit, operated in cooperation with Caltech, MIT, New Mexico Tech, and University of Colorado at Boulder.

Teen Talk program seeks volunteers

The Clark County TeenTalk program has four spots open for new teen volunteers. TeenTalk trains volunteers who are 15 to 19 years old, so that they can offer compassion and information to their peers.

Completion of pre-service training classes is required. Once training is completed, volunteers serve as peer counselors weekly for three hours.

Mental health first aid course set

There will be a Youth Mental Health First Aid course on Friday, Sept. 30 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The course teaches attendees a five-step action plan to offer help to people exhibiting the signs and symptoms of a mental illness or a crisis. Although it is targeted toward youth, organizers say the course is also beneficial to anyone in the community, including first responders, teachers, leaders of faith communities, human resource professionals and concerned citizens.

Auditions open for Junior Symphony of Vancouver

There will be open auditions for orchestral/chamber music instrumentalists for the Junior Symphony of Vancouver on Monday, Sept. 19.

Auditions are by appointment only with application, which is available at www.oregonchamberplayers.org. The concert for this session will be held Saturday, Dec. 10.

Auditions are open to young musicians of southwest Washington and Oregon, in middle school through college. Call 696-4084 for more information.

‘Pokemon Go’ meet-up is Aug. 26 at the Camas library

A “Pokemon Go” meet-up event will be held Friday, Aug. 26, at 7 p.m., at the Camas Public Library.

Participants can meet other players and share tips and stories.

All ages are welcome. Children ages 12 and younger must be accompanied by an adult. Crafts, coloring sheets and snacks will be available. Safety tips will be provided.

The library, located at 625 N.E. Fourth Ave., is a “Pokemon Go” gym.
